What are service packs?
Service packs are the means by which Internet Explorer product updates are distributed. Service packs keep the product current, and extend and update the product's functionality so you'll never have to worry about becoming out of date. Service packs include updates and may include additional components. All are conveniently bundled for easy downloading.

Windows 2000 Users: Internet Explorer Setup for Windows 2000 does not
allow you to customize the installation or use any advanced options in the Setup
program. This behavior occurs because of the new Windows File Protection (WFP)
feature in Windows 2000. For more information, please read Microsoft Knowledge

If you are running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0, installing
Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and Internet Tools will upgrade your computer to 128-bit encryption. If
you are running Windows 2000 or Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me),
installing Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and Internet Tools will not change the current level of
encryption on your computer.
Anti-virus software users: Some anti-virus software programs may
interfere with this download. Please disable anti-virus software while
installing Internet Explorer.
To run Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and Internet Tools, your computer must meet the
following minimum requirements:
- A 486 with a 66 megahertz (MHz) processor (Pentium processor recommended)
- For Windows 95 or Windows 98: 16 MB of random access memory
(RAM) minimum
- For Windows NT 4.0: 32 MB of RAM minimum, and you must be running Service
Pack 3 or later (If you have an earlier NT Service Pack installed on your computer, visit the Windows NT Downloads Web site to install the latest NT Service Pack before upgrading your Internet Explorer browser.)
- For Windows 2000: 64 MB of RAM minimum
- For Windows Me: 32 MB of RAM minimum
- Mouse
- Modem or Internet connection
